He's the world's first black bear detective, and he's sure of himself.
“I’m not trying to say anything bad about them,”
Bearstone said, “But if a couple of schlemiels like my
cousins Winnie and Paddington can make it by screwing
things up, think what a bear detective could do.”
“Bear detective?” I asked.
“Sure,” he said. “What did you think, I was going to
stand in the park selling balloons to three-year-olds?
What kind of smarmy pap would that be?”
I shrugged.
“See, that’s what’s wrong with people, especially when
it comes to storybook characters,” he said. “They take all
that Mother Goose and Brothers Grimm stuff and they
treat it like it’s gospel like that’s the way it all went
down. They won’t even do that for the New York
Times.”
“And somehow, you know differently?” I asked.
“Believe me, I’d look into that stuff and get the real
info,” he said. “A lot of these so-called kids’ stories need
an adult’s oversight.”
He nonchalantly took a croissant out of a bag from the
Hungry Bear Donut Factory and took a bite. He offered a
croissant to me. It was a delicious buttery bribe.
“Bearstone Blackie, detective,” he said. “I represent
the Bear With Us Detective Agency in El Bruno.”

Bearstone Blackie Detective edition by Ray Pace Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The writer, Pace, shares his twisted sense of humor, wild imagination, and solid story telling skill with the reader to bring you the first detective bear. The book will for sure have you see Mother Goose in an entirely different way. I found it a real fun read from beginning to end. It's not the kind of book you're to read cover to cover in one sitting. What my friend and I enjoyed was reading maybe one or two at most of the bear's capers at a time. I guess you could say we savored the thing. Anyway when we finished the whole twenty cases we for sure wanted more. And that's the conclusion, more Mr. Pace, more, please. .
Hilarious - a good read for any age. There are layers of satire mixed in with straight up funny stories. Pace has a mind like a maze as you will see if you are alert when you read his stories. Universal appeal. I laughed aloud in utter glee with every story. I'm in love with Bearstone Blackie.
What a nice surprise to pick up a book and have a fun time reading it from cover to cover. To have a Black bear detective who investigates various fairy tales is a gem of an idea and Ray Pace pulls it off in the most excellent way. I found myself laughing out loud. A good fun read through and through.
To say that Ray Pace is a funny man is like saying that Hemmingway drank a lot. If you've read any of his stuff you know that he sees the hu_or in everything before most of us arrive at the "m". His fracturing of our favorite children's tales is very typical of that talent and the wonderful thing about it is that we can foresee a whole string of giggles to come. I'm sure that political satire will emerge in subsequent offerings and I'm impatient.
The twin level of meaning is refreshing and offers his fertile wit rich loam. Where can you get this much fun for less than five bucks?
Think you are too old for fairy tales? Bearstone Blackie inspects, overturns, and polishes a beary funny look at familiar iconic tales and with a twist of his furry noggin, serves up a delicious retelling. Mr Blackie is guaranteed to make you giggle, snort, guffaw, and lol all over yourself. Be sure to run by the nearest bakery to stock up on honey buns and delicious butter croissants before you read.
A thoroughly enjoyable book! Clever use of puns and mixing of popular culture with much loved characters from classic stories in a way will have you laugh out loud! Think the social satire and wit of Mark Twain, (but for present day events), with the sweetness and goofiness of an Adam Sandler comedy and you *might* have it pictured without me giving spoilers and quoting my favorite passages. Speaking of pictures...I really think the next edition of this book deserves some additional artwork to illustrate each episode, because then it would be a GREAT book for grandparents to read aloud to their precocious grandchild (it's way too subversive for parents to read to their kid!!). It definitely lends itself to multiple installments that would work for a bedtime story. Kids may look forward to the next flavor of cannoli in each chapter with a giggle, but the jokes work on more than one level, so adults will not be bored. And if you DO read it to a child, rest assured there are no explicit scenes or foul language! How refreshing that someone can write a good funny book without potty humor or the f-bomb? I loved it!
This is a surprising little book with a passel of crazy characters!!! Hilarious bear shenanigans abound. You'd expect a detective to have a cigar butt hangin' out of his mouth, but this one sifts thru his clients with a sweet cannoli or a savory buttery croissant clenched tightly between his teeth. Instead of ashes, Bearstone Blackie wears his crumbs proudly and tickles your funny bone—I'd surely want him on my side. Solving the mysteries of simply turned around mixed up fairy tales is one of Ray Pace's forte—through a bear's eyes of course. But don't read it before you go to bed as your funny bone won't let you sleep.
